Compulsory School Attendance
Regular school attendance is essential for every child. Attending school every day helps your child reach their educational potential, build strong learning habits, and open up future career and life opportunities.
At Glenfield Park School, we work closely with families to support and encourage regular attendance. When students attend consistently, learning becomes easier and progress is more achievable.
If your Child Refuses to Attend School
If your child is reluctant or refuses to attend school, please contact the Principal as soon as possible to discuss your concerns. Together, we can explore strategies to support your child’s attendance. This may include:
- Referral to the school’s Learning and Support Team
- Connecting your child with relevant support services
- Developing an Attendance Improvement Plan in partnership with the Home School Liaison Program
If Attendance Does Not Improve
The NSW Department of Education may take further action if a child of compulsory school age continues to have ongoing unexplained or unjustified absences.
Possible actions include:
- Compulsory Schooling Conference: You and your child may be invited to attend a conference to identify supports and develop an agreed plan (known as Undertakings) to improve attendance.
- Application to the Children’s Court: If attendance remains unsatisfactory, the Department may apply to the Children’s Court for a Compulsory Schooling Order. The magistrate may also request a Compulsory Schooling Conference.
- Prosecution in the Local Court: In rare cases where attendance issues persist and compulsory schooling orders are not followed, legal action may be taken. This can result in a community service order or a fine.
