Restrictive Practice

A restrictive practice refers to any action that limits a person’s rights or freedom of movement, used with the primary purpose of protecting the individual or others from harm. In some cases, the use of a restrictive practice may be the least restrictive and safest option to support the health, safety, or wellbeing of a student.

The use of restrictive practices in all NSW public schools and government preschools is guided by six key principles. These principles inform decision-making at every level — from planning for individual student needs to developing whole-school procedures and environments that promote safety and inclusion.

The six guiding principles are:

  1. Student centered
  2. Least restrictive
  3. Used for the shortest time necessary
  4. Aimed at reducing and eliminating restrictive practices
  5. Monitored
  6. Reviewed regularly
